Present Continuous use

Present Continuous is used to talk about actions happening now, temporary situations, changing processes, and future arrangements.

I am working on the report right now.

Present Continuous Form

Subject + am / is / are + V-ing.

She is talking to her manager.
They are waiting for the bus.

Present Continuous Rule

  • Present Continuous is used for actions happening now or around the moment of speaking.
    I am reading an email now.
    She is speaking to a client at the moment.
  • It is often used for temporary situations.
    He is staying with his friends this week.
    We are working from home this month.
  • Present Continuous is also used for changing or developing situations.
    The weather is getting colder.
    More people are using online services.
  • It can be used for future arrangements, especially when the time or place is already planned.
    I am meeting my teacher tomorrow.
    They are flying to Berlin next week.
  • We often use time markers such as:
    now, right now, at the moment, today, this week, tonight
    She is working late tonight.
    I am feeling tired today.
  • There are some simple spelling rules for forming -ing forms.
    • If a verb ends in -e, we usually drop the e and add -ing (make → making).
    • If a short verb ends in consonant–vowel–consonant, we double the final consonant (run → running).
    • If a verb ends in -ie, we change it to y and add -ing (lie → lying).
    make → making, run → running, lie → lying
  • Some verbs are not usually used in continuous forms, for example: know, like, want, need, understand
    ✅ I know the answer.
    ❌ I am knowing the answer.

Present Continuous Negation

  • Negation is formed with am not, is not (isn't), and are not (aren't).
    I am not working now.
    She isn't listening to music.
    They aren't waiting outside.

Present Continuous Questions

In questions, the verb be comes before the subject.

Am / Is / Are + subject + V-ing?
Wh-word + am / is / are + subject + V-ing?

Are you working now?
Is she coming with us?
What are they doing?
Why is he leaving so early?

Present Continuous Common mistakes

✅ She is working now.
❌ I am work on the task.
✅ I am working on the task.
❌ Are you work now?
✅ Are you working now?
❌ I am knowing the answer.

I am writing an email to my manager right now.
She is preparing for an important presentation today.
We are discussing the new project at the moment.
He is staying in London this week.
They are meeting the client tomorrow afternoon.

They are planning a short trip for the weekend.
