Present Perfect Continuous use

Present Perfect Continuous is used to talk about an action that started in the past and is still continuing now, or has just stopped but has a visible result now.

She has been working here for three years.

Present Perfect Continuous Form

Subject + have/has been + V-ing

I have been studying all morning.
He has been waiting for you.

Present Perfect Continuous Rule

  • It is used for an action that started in the past and continues up to now.
    I have been living in this city since 2022.
    They have been learning English for six months.
  • It is used for an action that has recently stopped, but its result is visible now.
    She is tired because she has been running.
    Your clothes are wet because it has been raining.
  • It emphasizes the duration or process of an action.
    We have been working on this project all week.
    He has been preparing for the exam since morning.
  • It is often used with for and since to show duration.
    I have been reading for two hours.
    She has been working here since January.
  • Common time expressions include all day, all morning, recently, lately, for, and since.
    They have been talking all evening.
    I have been feeling tired lately.
  • Present Perfect Continuous focuses on the process, while Present Perfect more often focuses on the result.
    ✅ She has been writing emails all morning. (process)
    ✅ She has written five emails this morning. (result)
  • Some verbs are usually not used in continuous forms (know, like, want, need, understand).
    ✅ I have known her for years.
    ❌ I have been knowing her for years.

Present Perfect Continuous Negation

  • Negation is formed with have not been / has not been or the short forms haven't been / hasn't been.
    I haven't been sleeping well recently.
    She hasn't been working much this week.
    They haven't been studying lately.

Present Perfect Continuous Questions

In questions, have or has comes before the subject.

Have/Has + subject + been + V-ing?
Wh-word + have/has + subject + been + V-ing?

Have you been waiting long?
Has she been studying since morning?
Why have they been arguing?
How long has he been working here?
