Past Perfect Continuous use

Past Perfect Continuous is used to talk about an action that had been continuing for some time before a specific moment or another action in the past.

She had been working for two hours before the meeting started.

Past Perfect Continuous Form

Subject + had been + V-ing

I had been studying all evening.
They had been waiting for a long time.

Past Perfect Continuous Rule

  • It is used for actions that continued up to a certain moment in the past.
    I had been reading the report before my manager came in.
    She had been talking on the phone before the lesson started.
  • It emphasizes the duration of an action before another past event.
    They had been travelling for three days before they arrived.
    He had been working there for years before he changed jobs.
  • It is often used when we explain the cause of a past state or result.
    She was tired because she had been studying all night.
    The ground was wet because it had been raining.
  • It is often used with for and since to show duration.
    I had been living in London for five years before I moved to Cyprus.

  • Common time expressions include all day, all morning, for two hours, since Monday, before, and when.

  • Past Perfect Continuous focuses on the process, while Past Perfect more often focuses on the result.

  • Negation is formed with had not been or the short form hadn't been.
