There was / There were is used to say that something existed, was present, or was located somewhere in the past.

There was a book on the table yesterday.
There were two students in the classroom.

There was / There were Form

The form depends on whether we are talking about one thing / an uncountable noun or more than one thing in the past.

There was a problem with the printer this morning.
There was some milk in the fridge.

There was / There were Rule

  • There was is used with a singular noun, and there were is used with a plural noun.
    ✅ There was a lamp near the bed.

  • With uncountable nouns, we usually use there was.
    There was enough food for everyone.
    There was some information in the report.
  • After the structure, we often add a place or a time detail: in the room, on the table, last night.
    There was a cat under the chair.
    There were many people at the bus stop yesterday.
  • In affirmative sentences, we often use some, and in questions and negatives we often use any.
    ✅ There were some cookies in the box.
    ✅ Were there any cookies in the box?
    ✅ There weren’t any cookies in the box.
  • In spoken English, there was is often used in its regular form, and the negative is commonly shortened to there wasn’t. With there were, the full form or there weren’t is common.
    ✅ There wasn’t any message for you.
    ✅ There were several mistakes in the text.
  • If a list comes after the structure, the verb often agrees with the first noun in the list.
    ✅ There was a sofa and two chairs in the living room.
    ✅ There were two chairs and a sofa in the living room.

Negation is formed with not: there was not / there wasn’t and there were not / there weren’t.
