  • There was -rakennetta käytetään yksiköllisen substantiivin kanssa, ja there were -rakennetta käytetään monikollisen substantiivin kanssa.

  • Ei-laskettavien substantiivien kanssa käytämme yleensä muotoa there was.
    There was enough food for everyone.
    Ruokaa riitti kaikille.

  • Rakenteen jälkeen lisäämme usein paikan tai ajan yksityiskohdan: huoneessa, pöydällä, viime yönä.

  • Puhutussa englannissa there was käytetään usein tavallisessa muodossaan, ja kielteinen muoto lyhennetään yleensä muotoon there wasn’t. Muodon there were kanssa koko muoto tai there weren’t on tavallinen.

    ✅ There were several mistakes in the text.
  • Jos luettelo tulee rakenteen jälkeen, verbi kongruoi usein luettelon ensimmäisen substantiivin kanssa.
