There was / There were é usado para dizer que algo existia, estava presente ou estava localizado em algum lugar no passado.

There was a book on the table yesterday.

A forma depende de estarmos a falar de uma coisa / um substantivo incontável ou de mais do que uma coisa no passado.

There was + singular noun / uncountable noun
There were + plural noun

There was a problem with the printer this morning.
Houve um problema com a impressora esta manhã.

There was some milk in the fridge.
Havia um pouco de leite na geladeira.

There were three chairs in the room.
Havia três cadeiras na sala.

There was / There were Regra

There was é usado com um substantivo no singular, e there were é usado com um substantivo no plural.

✅ There was a lamp near the bed.

✅ There were two lamps near the bed.
Com substantivos incontáveis, geralmente usamos there was.
There was enough food for everyone.
Havia comida suficiente para todos.

There was some information in the report.
Havia algumas informações no relatório.
Depois da estrutura, muitas vezes acrescentamos um lugar ou um detalhe de tempo: na sala, sobre a mesa, ontem à noite.
There was a cat under the chair.
Havia um gato debaixo da cadeira.

There were many people at the bus stop yesterday.
Havia muitas pessoas no ponto de ônibus ontem.
Em frases afirmativas, costumamos usar some, e em perguntas e frases negativas costumamos usar any.

No inglês falado, there was é frequentemente usado em sua forma regular, e a forma negativa é comumente abreviada para there wasn’t. Com there were, a forma completa ou there weren’t é comum.

Se uma lista vier após a estrutura, o verbo frequentemente concorda com o primeiro substantivo da lista.

A negação é formada com not: there was not / there wasn’t e there were not / there weren’t.
