There was / There were se folosește pentru a spune că ceva a existat, a fost prezent sau s-a aflat undeva în trecut.

Forma depinde de faptul dacă vorbim despre un lucru / un substantiv necontabil sau despre mai mult de un lucru în trecut.

There was a problem with the printer this morning.

There was / There were Regulă

  • There was se folosește cu un substantiv la singular, iar there were se folosește cu un substantiv la plural.
    ✅ There was a lamp near the bed.
    ✅ There were two lamps near the bed.
  • Cu substantivele nenumărabile, de obicei folosim there was.
    There was enough food for everyone.
    Era destulă mâncare pentru toată lumea.
    There was some information in the report.
    În raport erau câteva informații.
  • După structură, adăugăm adesea un loc sau un detaliu de timp: în cameră, pe masă, aseară.
    There was a cat under the chair.
    Era o pisică sub scaun.

  • În propozițiile afirmative, folosim adesea some, iar în întrebări și propoziții negative folosim adesea any.

  • În engleza vorbită, there was este adesea folosit în forma sa obișnuită, iar forma negativă este de obicei prescurtată la there wasn’t. Cu there were, sunt frecvente forma completă sau there weren’t.

    ✅ There were several mistakes in the text.
  • Dacă o listă urmează după structură, verbul se acordă adesea cu primul substantiv din listă.
    ✅ There was a sofa and two chairs in the living room.

Negația se formează cu not: there was not / there wasn’t și there were not / there weren’t.
