There was / There were se usa para decir que algo existía, estaba presente o estaba ubicado en algún lugar en el pasado.

There was a book on the table yesterday.
Había un libro sobre la mesa ayer.

There was / There were Forma

La forma depende de si estamos hablando de una cosa / un sustantivo incontable o de más de una cosa en el pasado.

There was a problem with the printer this morning.
Hubo un problema con la impresora esta mañana.
There was some milk in the fridge.
Había algo de leche en la nevera.

There was / There were Regla

  • There was se usa con un sustantivo singular, y there were se usa con un sustantivo plural.
    ✅ There was a lamp near the bed.
    ✅ There were two lamps near the bed.
  • Con sustantivos incontables, normalmente usamos there was.
    There was enough food for everyone.
    Había suficiente comida para todos.
    There was some information in the report.
    Había algo de información en el informe.
  • Después de la estructura, a menudo añadimos un lugar o un detalle de tiempo: en la habitación, sobre la mesa, anoche.
    There was a cat under the chair.
    Había un gato debajo de la silla.
    There were many people at the bus stop yesterday.
    Había mucha gente en la parada de autobús ayer.
  • En las oraciones afirmativas, a menudo usamos some, y en las preguntas y negativas a menudo usamos any.

  • En el inglés hablado, there was se usa a menudo en su forma regular, y la forma negativa se suele abreviar como there wasn’t. Con there were, son comunes la forma completa o there weren’t.

  • Si una lista aparece después de la estructura, el verbo a menudo concuerda con el primer sustantivo de la lista.
