There is / There are se usa para decir que algo existe, está presente o se encuentra en algún lugar. Esta estructura ayuda a introducir a una persona, cosa u objeto en la conversación.

There is a book on the table.
Hay un libro sobre la mesa.
There are two students in the classroom.
Hay dos estudiantes en el aula.

There is / There are Forma

La forma depende de si estamos hablando de una cosa / un sustantivo incontable o de más de una cosa.

There is + singular noun / uncountable noun
There are + plural noun

There is a problem with the printer.
Hay un problema con la impresora.
There is some milk in the fridge.
Hay un poco de leche en la nevera.
There are three chairs in the room.

There is / There are Regla

  • There is se usa con un sustantivo singular, y there are se usa con un sustantivo plural.
    ✅ There is a lamp near the bed.
    ✅ There are two lamps near the bed.
  • Con sustantivos incontables, normalmente usamos there is.
    There is enough time.
    Hay suficiente tiempo.
    There is some information in the email.
    Hay información en el correo electrónico.
  • Después de la estructura, a menudo añadimos un lugar u otro detalle: sobre la mesa, en la habitación, en la escuela.
    There is a cat under the chair.
    Hay un gato debajo de la silla.
    There are many people at the bus stop.
    Hay muchas personas en la parada de autobús.
  • En las oraciones afirmativas, a menudo usamos some, y en las preguntas y negativas a menudo usamos any.

    ✅ There aren’t any cookies in the box.
  • En el inglés hablado, there is a menudo se acorta a there’s. En el caso de there are, normalmente se prefiere la forma completa.
    ✅ There’s a message for you.

  • Si una lista aparece después de la estructura, el verbo a menudo concuerda con el primer sustantivo de la lista.
    ✅ There is a sofa and two chairs in the living room.
