There is / There are utilisons

There is / There are s’emploie pour dire que quelque chose existe, est présent ou se trouve quelque part. Cette structure aide à introduire une personne, une chose ou un objet dans la conversation.

There is a book on the table.
Il y a un livre sur la table.
There are two students in the classroom.
Il y a deux élèves dans la salle de classe.

There is / There are Forme

La forme dépend du fait que l’on parle d’une chose / d’un nom indénombrable ou de plus d’une chose.

There is + singular noun / uncountable noun
There are + plural noun

There is a problem with the printer.
Il y a un problème avec l’imprimante.
There is some milk in the fridge.
Il y a du lait dans le réfrigérateur.
There are three chairs in the room.
Il y a trois chaises dans la pièce.

There is / There are Règle

  • There is s’emploie avec un nom singulier, et there are s’emploie avec un nom pluriel.
    ✅ There is a lamp near the bed.
    ✅ There are two lamps near the bed.
  • Avec les noms indénombrables, on utilise généralement there is.
    There is enough time.
    Il y a assez de temps.
    There is some information in the email.
    Il y a des informations dans l’e-mail.
  • Après la structure, nous ajoutons souvent un lieu ou un autre détail : sur la table, dans la pièce, à l’école.
    There is a cat under the chair.
    Il y a un chat sous la chaise.
    There are many people at the bus stop.
    Il y a beaucoup de gens à l’arrêt de bus.
  • Dans les phrases affirmatives, on utilise souvent some, et dans les questions et les phrases négatives, on utilise souvent any.
    ✅ There are some cookies in the box.
    ✅ Are there any cookies in the box?
    ✅ There aren’t any cookies in the box.
  • En anglais parlé, there is est souvent abrégé en there’s. Pour there are, on préfère généralement la forme complète.
    ✅ There’s a message for you.
    ✅ There are several mistakes in this text.
  • Si une liste vient après la structure, le verbe s’accorde souvent avec le premier nom de la liste.
    ✅ There is a sofa and two chairs in the living room.
    ✅ There are two chairs and a sofa in the living room.

There is / There are Négation

La négation se forme avec not : there is not / there isn’t et there are not / there aren’t.

There is not + singular noun / uncountable noun
There are not + plural noun

There isn’t any sugar in the cupboard.
Il n’y a pas de sucre dans le placard.
There aren’t any free tables.
Il n’y a pas de tables libres.
There isn’t much traffic today.
Il n’y a pas beaucoup de circulation aujourd’hui.
