Countable and Uncountable Nouns usamos

Substantivos contáveis são substantivos que podemos contar um a um: uma maçã, dois livros. Substantivos incontáveis são substantivos geralmente vistos como uma massa, substância, material, ideia abstrata ou conjunto coletivo: água, arroz, móveis, informação, conselho. Este tópico ajuda você a escolher corretamente a/an, the, some, any, many, much, a few, a little e a forma verbal correta.

Countable and Uncountable Nouns Forma

Substantivos contáveis têm formas no singular e no plural. Substantivos incontáveis geralmente não têm forma no plural, não são usados com a/an e normalmente exigem um verbo no singular.

Countable: a book → books / an apple → apples
Uncountable: milk, rice, money, information, furniture, advice

Countable and Uncountable Nouns Regra

• Antes de um substantivo contável singular, geralmente precisamos de um determinante: por exemplo, um artigo (a/an/the), um possessivo (my, your, his, her, our, their), um demonstrativo (this, that) ou outro determinante.
  ✅ I need a chair.

  ✅ The chair by the window is broken.

  ✅ My phone is in the bag.

  ❌ I need chair.
• Com substantivos no plural e substantivos incontáveis, não usamos a/an. Quando falamos em geral, o substantivo é frequentemente usado sem artigo. Quando nos referimos a algo específico, frequentemente usamos the.
  ✅ Cars are expensive. (= cars in general)

  ✅ The cars outside are ours. (= specific cars)

  ✅ I drink coffee. (= coffee in general)

• Normalmente não usamos a/an com substantivos incontáveis. Eles geralmente levam um verbo no singular.

• Some é geralmente usado em frases afirmativas, e any é mais comum em perguntas e frases negativas. Mas também podemos usar some em perguntas quando oferecemos, pedimos algo ou esperamos a resposta “sim”.

• Use many / a few / few com substantivos contáveis e much / a little / little com substantivos incontáveis. Em frases afirmativas comuns, a lot of / lots of costuma soar mais natural do que many / much.

  ✅ I have few ideas. (= not many, not enough)

  ✅ There isn’t much time.

• Para perguntar sobre quantidade, use How many...? com substantivos contáveis e How much...? com substantivos incontáveis.

• Para “contar” um substantivo incontável, use uma unidade, um recipiente ou uma expressão pronta: um pedaço de, um pouco de, uma garrafa de, uma xícara de, um pão de, uma fatia de.

• Algumas palavras que podem ser contáveis em outras línguas geralmente são incontáveis em inglês: advice, information, furniture, luggage, news, research, homework, equipment, traffic, progress, knowledge.

• Alguns substantivos podem ser ao mesmo tempo contáveis e incontáveis. O significado muda dependendo do contexto.
  ✅ I don’t drink much coffee. (= the drink in general)

  ✅ We’d like two coffees. (= two cups)
  ✅ I’d like some cake. (= cake as food)

  ✅ She baked two cakes. (= two whole cakes)
  ✅ She has long hair. (= hair in general)

• Alguns substantivos parecem substantivos no plural e geralmente são usados apenas nessa forma: calças, tesouras, óculos, binóculos. Para contá-los, usamos frequentemente um par de.
  ✅ My trousers are too long.

Erros comuns: deixar um substantivo contável no singular sem uma palavra antes dele, usar a/an com um substantivo incontável, colocar um substantivo incontável no plural, escolher a palavra de quantidade errada ou confundir o sentido geral com o específico.
