Countable and Uncountable Nouns usiamo

I sostantivi numerabili sono sostantivi che possiamo contare uno per uno: una mela, due libri. I sostantivi non numerabili sono sostantivi solitamente considerati come una massa, una sostanza, un materiale, un’idea astratta o un insieme collettivo: acqua, riso, mobili, informazioni, consigli. Questo argomento ti aiuta a scegliere correttamente un/una, il/la, del/della, qualche, molti, molto, pochi, poco e la forma verbale corretta.

Countable and Uncountable Nouns Forma

I sostantivi numerabili hanno forme singolari e plurali. I sostantivi non numerabili di solito non hanno una forma plurale, non si usano con un/una e di solito richiedono un verbo al singolare.

Countable: a book → books / an apple → apples
Uncountable: milk, rice, money, information, furniture, advice

Countable and Uncountable Nouns Regola

• Davanti a un sostantivo numerabile singolare, di solito abbiamo bisogno di un determinante: per esempio, un articolo (a/an/the), un possessivo (my, your, his, her, our, their), un dimostrativo (this, that) o un altro determinante.
  ✅ I need a chair.

  ✅ The chair by the window is broken.

  ✅ My phone is in the bag.

  ❌ I need chair.
• Con i sostantivi plurali e i sostantivi non numerabili, non usiamo a/an. Quando parliamo in generale, il sostantivo è spesso usato senza articolo. Quando intendiamo qualcosa di specifico, usiamo spesso the.
  ✅ Cars are expensive. (= cars in general)

  ✅ The cars outside are ours. (= specific cars)

  ✅ I drink coffee. (= coffee in general)

  ✅ The coffee on the table is cold. (= specific coffee)
• Di solito non usiamo a/an con i sostantivi non numerabili. Di solito richiedono un verbo al singolare.
  ✅ Money is important.

  ✅ Research takes time.

  ✅ The news is good.
• Some si usa di solito nelle frasi affermative, e any è più comune nelle domande e nelle frasi negative. Ma possiamo usare some anche nelle domande quando offriamo qualcosa, chiediamo qualcosa, o ci aspettiamo la risposta “sì”.
  ✅ I bought some apples.

  ✅ We need some sugar.

  ✅ Do you have any apples?

  ✅ Would you like some tea?

• Usa many / a few / few con i sostantivi numerabili, e much / a little / little con i sostantivi non numerabili. Nelle normali frasi affermative, a lot of / lots of è spesso più naturale di many / much.
  ✅ There are many people here.

  ✅ I have a few ideas. (= some, enough)

  ✅ I have few ideas. (= not many, not enough)

  ✅ There isn’t much time.

  ✅ Add a little salt. (= some, enough)

  ✅ We have little money left. (= not enough)

• Per chiedere la quantità, usa How many...? con i sostantivi numerabili e How much...? con i sostantivi non numerabili.

  ✅ How much water do we need?
• Per “contare” un sostantivo non numerabile, usa un’unità, un contenitore o un’espressione fissa: un pezzo di, un po’ di, una bottiglia di, una tazza di, una pagnotta di, una fetta di.

• Alcune parole che possono essere numerabili in altre lingue sono di solito non numerabili in inglese: advice, information, furniture, luggage, news, research, homework, equipment, traffic, progress, knowledge.

• Alcuni sostantivi possono essere sia numerabili che non numerabili. Il significato cambia a seconda del contesto.
  ✅ I don’t drink much coffee. (= the drink in general)

  ✅ We’d like two coffees. (= two cups)
  ✅ I’d like some cake. (= cake as food)

  ✅ She baked two cakes. (= two whole cakes)
  ✅ She has long hair. (= hair in general)

  ✅ There is a hair in my soup. (= one strand)
  ✅ I don’t have much free time this week. (= time in general)

  ✅ I go to the gym three times a week. (= number of times)

• Alcuni sostantivi sembrano sostantivi plurali e di solito si usano solo in quella forma: pantaloni, forbici, occhiali, binocolo. Per contarli, usiamo spesso un paio di.
  ✅ My trousers are too long.

Countable and Uncountable Nouns Errori tipici

Errori comuni: lasciare un sostantivo numerabile singolare senza una parola davanti, usare a/an con un sostantivo non numerabile, rendere plurale un sostantivo non numerabile, scegliere la parola di quantità sbagliata o confondere il significato generale con quello specifico.
