ሊቆጠሩ የሚችሉ ስሞች አንድ በአንድ ልንቆጥራቸው የምንችል ስሞች ናቸው፦ አንድ ፖም፣ ሁለት መጽሐፍት። ሊቆጠሩ የማይችሉ ስሞች ብዙውን ጊዜ እንደ ጅምላ፣ ንጥረ ነገር፣ ቁሳቁስ፣ አብስትራክት ሀሳብ ወይም አንድ የጋራ አጠቃላይ ነገር ሆነው የሚታዩ ስሞች ናቸው፦ ውሃ፣ ሩዝ፣ ዕቃዎች፣ መረጃ፣ ምክር። ይህ ርዕስ ትክክለኛውን a/an፣ the፣ some፣ any፣ many፣ much፣ a few፣ a little እና ትክክለኛውን የግስ ቅጽ እንድትመርጡ ይረዳዎታል።

የሚቆጠሩ ስሞች ነጠላ እና ብዙ ቅርጾች አሏቸው። የማይቆጠሩ ስሞች ብዙ ጊዜ የብዙ ቅርጽ አይኖራቸውም፣ ከa/an ጋር አይጠቀሙም፣ እና ብዙ ጊዜ ነጠላ ግስ ይወስዳሉ።

Countable: a book → books / an apple → apples
Uncountable: milk, rice, money, information, furniture, advice

• ከአንድ ነጠላ ሊቆጠር የሚችል ስም በፊት፣ ብዙ ጊዜ መወሰኛ ያስፈልገናል፤ ለምሳሌ፣ አርቲክል (a/an/the)፣ የባለቤትነት መወሰኛ (my, your, his, her, our, their)፣ አመልካች መወሰኛ (this, that)፣ ወይም ሌላ መወሰኛ።

• ከብዙ ቁጥር ስሞች እና የማይቆጠሩ ስሞች ጋር a/an አንጠቀምም። በአጠቃላይ ስናገር ስሙ ብዙ ጊዜ ያለ አርቲክል ይጠቀማል። የተለየ ነገር ማለት ሲሆን ግን ብዙ ጊዜ the እንጠቀማለን።
