something、anything、nothing などは不定代名詞です。これらは、特定の人・物・場所をはっきり示さないときに、人や物、場所について話すのに役立ちます。

There is nothing interesting on TV, so I am going to read something.
テレビでは面白いものは何もやっていないので、何か読むことにします。

これらの語は、some / any / no / every に、人・物・場所を表す語尾をつけるというシンプルなパターンに従っています。

  • -body と -one はほとんどいつも同じ意味です：somebody = someone、anybody = anyone、nobody = no one。
  • No one は通常、2語で書かれます。Noone は誤りです。
  • これらの代名詞は通常、単数形の動詞を取ります：Everyone is...、Something is...、Nobody knows...
I saw somebody on the roof.

  • some- を含む語は、特定されていない人・物・場所について話すとき、たいてい肯定文で使われます。
    Someone is at the door.
    誰かがドアのところにいます。
    Ann had to buy something new.
    アンは何か新しいものを買わなければならなかった。
    Let's go somewhere quiet.
    静かなところへ行こう。
  • any- を含む語は、否定文や中立的な疑問文で最もよく使われます。
    She couldn't find anything suitable in her closet.
    彼女はクローゼットの中にふさわしいものを何も見つけられなかった。
    Has anybody seen my keys?
    誰か私の鍵を見ませんでしたか？
    I can't find my dog anywhere.
    犬がどこにも見つかりません。
  • 肯定文では、anyone / anything / anywhere は「どんな人でも／どんな物でも／どんな場所でも」という意味になることがあります。
    Anyone can learn English with enough practice.
    十分に練習すれば、誰でも英語を学べます。
    You can choose anything from this menu.
    このメニューから何でもお選びいただけます。
    We can sit anywhere you like.
    どこでもお好きなところに座れます。
  • no- で始まる語はすでに否定の意味を含んでいるので、通常は肯定の動詞形と一緒に使います。

    no one / nobody / nothing / nowhere + positive verb

    Nothing happened.
    何も起こらなかった。
    I have nobody to talk to.
    話し相手が誰もいない。
    There was nowhere to park.
    駐車する場所がどこにもなかった。
  • every- を含む語は「すべての人／すべての物／すべての場所」を意味しますが、文法的には通常、単数形の動詞を伴います。
    Everyone likes this teacher.
    みんなこの先生が好きです。
    Everything is ready for the party.
    パーティーの準備はすべて整っています。
    There are toys everywhere.
    おもちゃがあちこちにあります。
  • 形容詞は不定代名詞の後に来ます：something interesting、anyone famous、somewhere warm。
    There is nothing interesting on TV.
    テレビでは面白いものは何もやっていない。
    I want to buy something useful.
    何か役に立つものを買いたいです。
    Do you know anyone famous?

  • 私たちはこれらの代名詞の後によく to + 不定詞 を使います：何か飲むもの、することが何もない、誰か助けてくれる人。

  • else は不定代名詞の後に置かれ、「別の／ほかの／さらに」を意味します。

  • 所有を表すために 's を付けることができます：somebody's bag、anyone's coat、somebody else's phone。
    This is somebody's notebook.

Something, Anything, Nothing, etc. 否定

英語では、通常、1つの単純な文の中で二重否定は使いません。したがって、否定動詞 + any- か 肯定動詞 + no- のどちらか1つのパターンを選びます。

not + anyone / anybody / anything / anywhere
= no one / nobody / nothing / nowhere

  • not / never / hardly / seldom の後では、通常 no- ではなく any- を使います。
    ✅ I have never seen anything like this.
    ❌ I have never seen nothing like this.
    ✅ She hardly knows anyone here.
    ❌ She hardly knows no one here.
  • 否定代名詞が主語の場合は、no- と肯定形の動詞を使います。
    ✅ Nobody came.
    ❌ Anybody didn't come.
    ✅ Nothing will change my mind.
    ❌ Not anything will change my mind.

中立的な疑問文では、通常 anyone / anybody / anything / anywhere を使います。依頼文や申し出では、肯定的な返答を予想したり、助けを申し出たりするため、some- をよく使います。

Something, Anything, Nothing, etc. よくある間違い

最もよくある間違いは、二重否定、形容詞の位置の誤り、everyone / everything の後に複数形の動詞を使うこと、そして no one のつづりです。

❌ Nobody didn't come.
✅ Nobody came.
❌ There isn't nowhere to sit.
