Reported speech használjuk
Mások szavainak elbeszélésére használjuk úgy, hogy megváltoztatjuk a formájukat, hogy a szöveg részévé váljanak, ne pedig közvetlen idézetté.
Az egyenes beszédet függő beszéddé alakítjuk.
Reported speech Forma
Subject + reporting V, that subject + V (szükség esetén időeltolással / igeidőváltással)
“I am tired”, she said.
She said that she was tired.
Reported speech Szabály
Angolban a függő beszédet nem tesszük idézőjelbe, ellentétben a függő beszéddel:George said, “I am ready to dance with you.”
George said (that) he was ready to dance with me.

Ha a cselekvés a beszéd pillanatában is aktuális.
Ha az állítás most is igaz.I live in Paris. She said she lives in Paris. (mert még mindig ott él) -
Ha a mellékmondat Past Continuous-ban van, beszélt nyelvben az igeidő nem feltétlenül változik meg.
He said, “I was playing football when she called me.”.
Azt mondta: „Fociztam, amikor felhívott.”. He said that he was playing football when she called him.
Azt mondta, hogy éppen focizott, amikor felhívta őt. -
Ha a jelentő ige jelen időben van
says, tells, has said esetén nincs igeidő-eltolódás.I’m busy. She says she is busy

:
say, tell, add, explain, mention, reply, answer, admit, agree, deny, promise…I’m tired. She said that she was tired. -
Igék, amelyeket to-infinitive követ:
advise, ask, tell, order, persuade, remind, warn, invite, encourage…Don’t be late. He told me to not be late.

Adja hozzá / tartsa meg a not-ot a főige előtt
I don’t like it. She said she didn’t like it.

Ha a modális igének van not tagadása, megváltoztatjuk a modális igét és hozzáadjuk a not szót.
I can’t help you. He said he couldn’t help me.

Ha a not a jelentésre vonatkozik, nem a nyelvtanra, akkor úgy hagyjuk.
Don’t worry. He told me not to worry.

Függő beszédben az általános igen/nem kérdések
if vagy whether kötőszóval kapcsolódnak.
A kérdés szórendje kijelentőmondati szórendre változik.

A if a szokásos Yes/No kérdésekben használatos, amikor csak azt kell megtudni, hogy „igen vagy nem”.
Do you like it? He asked if I liked it.

Whether akkor használjuk, ha a kérdés választási lehetőséget tartalmaz.
