Koristimo ga za prepričavanje tuđih riječi mijenjajući njihov oblik kako bi postale dio vašeg teksta, a ne izravni citat.
Pretvaramo izravni govor u neupravni govor.

Opće istine, činjenice, prirodni zakoni.
Ako je nešto uvijek istinito — vrijeme se ne mijenja:The Earth moves around the Sun. He said that the Earth moves around the Sun. -
Kada je radnja još uvijek aktualna u trenutku govora.
Ako je tvrdnja i dalje istinita sada.I live in Paris. She said she lives in Paris. (jer ona još uvijek tamo živi) -
Ako je zavisna rečenica u Past Continuousu, u govornom jeziku glagolsko vrijeme se ponekad ne mijenja.
He said, “I was playing football when she called me.”.
Rekao je: "Igrao sam nogomet kad me nazvala.". He said that he was playing football when she called him.
Rekao je da je igrao nogomet kada ga je nazvala. -
Ako je glagol izvještavanja u prezentu
Uz says, tells, has said nema pomaka vremena.I’m busy. She says she is busy

Glagoli nakon kojih slijedi to-infinitive:
advise, ask, tell, order, persuade, remind, warn, invite, encourage…Don’t be late. He told me to not be late.

Dodajte / zadržite not ispred glavnog glagola
I don’t like it. She said she didn’t like it.

Ako modalni glagol ima negaciju s not, mijenjamo modalni glagol i dodajemo not.
I can’t help you. He said he couldn’t help me.

Ako se not odnosi na značenje, a ne na gramatiku — ostavljamo ga.
Don’t worry. He told me not to worry.

U neupravnom govoru opća (da/ne) pitanja uvode se veznicima
if ili whether.
Raspored riječi u pitanju mijenja se u raspored kao u izjavnoj rečenici.

If se koristi u uobičajenim Yes/No pitanjima kada treba samo saznati „da ili ne“.
Do you like it? He asked if I liked it.

Whether se koristi kada pitanje sadrži alternativu ili izbor.
Do you want tea or coffee? He asked whether I wanted tea or coffee.
